Felabration 2026: New generation of artistes keeps Fela’s legacy alive

Femi and Made

From emerging performers to established stars, Felabration 2026 once again demonstrated that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s influence extends beyond his music, inspiring new generations to reinterpret his sound, style and spirit of social consciousness.

The week-long festival, held from October 12 to 18 at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, ended on Sunday with performances by Femi Kuti, Kcee and other artistes, bringing together different generations of Nigerian musicians in celebration of the Afrobeat pioneer.

Themed ‘Who Are You?’, the event explored Fela’s enduring relevance through music, fashion, visual art and public debate. The festival opened with activities that extended beyond the concert stage.

The Fela Debates on October 12 brought Lagos governorship candidates together to discuss governance and public accountability, while the art competition recognised visual artists interpreting Fela’s cultural influence. The wider programme also included fashion and dance activities, reinforcing the festival’s position as a celebration of Nigerian creativity.

As performances gathered momentum, emerging acts shared the spotlight with more established names. On October 13, Tobi Majek and the Da Seed Band performed alongside Scott Martins and the Electrified Band, among other performers.

Their appearances reflected the festival’s continuing role in creating space for younger musicians to introduce their sound to new audiences while drawing inspiration from Afrobeat’s rich musical heritage.

One of the week’s notable musical moments came on October 15, the date that would have marked Fela’s 88th birthday. Femi Kuti joined Fuji star Abass Obesere for a performance that brought two distinct Nigerian musical traditions together. The collaboration illustrated how Fela’s legacy can remain alive through musical exchange rather than being confined to reproducing the past.

The festival’s closing weekend further highlighted its generational and stylistic range. On Saturday, October 17, Daddy Showkey, Ice Prince, Ruggedman, Peruzzi, Barry Jhay and Shoday were among the artistes who performed. The mix of veteran entertainers and contemporary acts connected different eras of Nigerian popular music, giving audiences a broad view of the country’s evolving sound

Sunday’s finale featured Femi Kuti and Kcee, whose performances brought Afrobeat and contemporary Nigerian pop into the same closing programme. Kcee added a theatrical touch by introducing masquerades during his set, while Femi’s performance reaffirmed the continuing connection between the festival and the Kuti musical legacy.

Yet Felabration’s significance lies in more than its line-up. Fela’s legacy was built on music that challenged authority, questioned social injustice and demanded accountability. For younger artistes, the challenge is to carry that spirit forward in ways that speak to contemporary realities, rather than simply borrow his rhythms, fashion or rebellious image.
