‘Taste Of Japan’… Loud in Lagos

Taste Of Japan

Designed to introduce Nigerians to the richness of Japanese food, beverages and cultural traditions, while strengthening people-to-people ties between both countries, the Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, Mr Suzuki Hideo, has highlighted the cultural depth and global recognition of Japanese cuisine as guests gathered in Lagos for the “Taste of Japan” event hosted by the Japanese Embassy.

Speaking during the event at Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island last weekend, the ambassador said Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial hub where diverse cultures meet, was an ideal setting to showcase Japanese culinary heritage. “Today is all about enjoying Japanese tastes and flavours,” the ambassador said, expressing delight at the opportunity to share Japan’s food and beverages with guests in the city.

According to Hideo, traditional Japanese cuisine, known as Washoku, as well as the traditional knowledge and skills involved in sake (beer) making have both been recognised by the UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. He explained that these traditions reflect core Japanese values such as seasonality, balance and careful preparation, as well as respect for nature and longstanding cultural practices.

Guests at the event were offered a tasting experience featuring over 20 varieties of Japanese beverages and foods, allowing participants to compare aromas and observe how flavours evolve when paired with food.

The ambassador said the residence chef had prepared a variety of Japanese dishes, including sushi and tempura, to complement the beverages and give guests a fuller culinary experience.

Beyond the food tasting, attendees were also treated to a matcha experience and a performance of Bon Odori, a traditional Japanese dance, aimed at deepening appreciation of Japanese culture.

The envoy expressed appreciation to Nigerian partners and Japanese companies that supported the event and helped make the tasting possible. Special recognition was also given to Mrs. Hidemi Obiorah and her company for their dedication and role in organising the event.

Dignitaries at the event included the President and Chairman of Council, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Engr Leye Kupoluyi, among others.
