Echefu emerges as 45th President of Rotary Club of Festac Town

The District Governor, Rotary International District 9111, Rotarian Bukola Bakare, has installed Rotarian McAnthony Echefu as the 45th President of the Rotary Club of Festac Town.

Speaking at the event, which was also used to raise funds to support the club’s humanitarian projects, Echefu said his administration would focus on projects that aligned with Rotary International’s seven areas of focus: peace-building and conflict prevention, disease prevention and treatment, water, sanitation and hygiene, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, community economic development, and environmental sustainability.

According to him, he accepted the office not merely as an honour but as a responsibility to lead, inspire and transform lives.

“I am grateful to God Almighty for the privilege to serve. I am grateful to the members of Rotary Club of Festac Town for the confidence they have reposed in me,” he said.

He said the club’s flagship project for the year would be a heart health initiative tagged ‘Know Your Numbers and Save Your Life,’ aimed at promoting regular blood pressure checks, early detection and prompt referral for treatment.

He also announced plans for glaucoma screening, cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination programme for 100 young women.

Other projects he announced include the provision of a solar-powered borehole for an underserved community and the distribution of 1,000 French dictionaries to support language learning among pupils.

On economic empowerment, Echecfu said the club would provide vulnerable members of the community with income-generating equipment, including sewing machines, vulcanising machines, grinding machines, baking ovens and other vocational tools.

“We do not simply want to give people something to consume. We want to give people something they can use to build. A sewing machine can become a tailoring business. An oven can become a bakery. A grinding machine can become a source of daily income,” he said.

He called on individuals, corporate organisations and development partners to support the club’s humanitarian initiatives, assuring donors of transparency and accountability.

The event was chaired by retired Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs, Dera Anselm Nnadi, while Prof. Humphrey Akanazu delivered the keynote address.
