All is set for the Asagba of Asaba International Wrestling Championship in Delta State. The championship will feature professional wrestlers from Egypt, Cameroon, DR Congo, Ghana, Angola, United Arab Emirates, and Nigeria. South Africa has withdrawn from the championship for fear of COVID-19.

The championship is expected to hold August 28 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

Speaking with journalists in Asaba yesterday, the president of, Nigeria’s Professional Wrestling Federation, John Uche, said about 25 local and international wrestlers, including the current national heavyweight champion, Mighty Man from Delta State, will feature in the event. He revealed that the wrestlers would battle for President Muhammadu Buhari belt, Governor Okowa title, Asagba’s crown, and Delta State First Lady belts.

Uche hinted that the event, which was initially scheduled for the first week of this month, was postponed to August 28 due to some logistics problems faced by some of the foreign wrestlers. Some were unable to secure visas to Nigeria within the given time, Uche said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic added to the predicament of the foreign-based wrestlers,” Uche said, adding that the championship is being organised by NPWF in honour of Prof. Chike Edozie, the Asagba of Asaba. He also disclosed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is the father of the day, would declare the tournament open. Uche said the wrestling tournament is to celebrate the Asagba’s 30 years on the throne, as well as 30 years of the creation of Asaba as the capital of Delta State.
