Bayelsa Queens are 2022 NWFL Premier League champions
Bayelsa Queens, yesterday, defeated Nasarawa Amazons at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, to become the 2021/2022 Nigerian Women Football League (NWFL) champions.
Yenagoa-based Bayelsa United, led by former junior international, Moses Aduku, were forced to wait till the last day of the NWFL Premiership Super Six play-off to be crowned champions after four victories in the competition.
Top goal scorer, Gift Monday, opened scores for Bayelsa United in the first minute, but Amoo Basirat equalised for the ‘Solid’ Babes in the 18th minute through a well taken free-kick that beat Onyinye Okeke in goal.
Bayelsa United regained their lead through another Monday goal on the 23rd minute through a great header. Earlier, Bayelsa United had beaten defending champions, Rivers Angels 2-1 in their first game, thrashed Naija Ratels 4-0 on Matchday two, beat Edo Queens 2-0, before defeating Delta Queens by a lone goal on Matchday 4.
Speaking at the end of the competition, chairperson, NWFL, Aisha Falode, commended stakeholders for supporting the league in 2022, especially “Tulcan Energy Resources, Peculiar Ultimate Concerns and Edo State government.”
She described the season as successful, adding, “We cannot forget all the stakeholders that made it possible. The NWFL is fast becoming a huge brand and I am sure it can only get better.”
In the individual awards, Monday went home with the top scorers’ and MVP awards after netting 12 goals, three during the regular season and eight during the NWFL Premiership Super 6.
Bayelsa Queens’ Camerounian goalkeeper, Ange Gabrielle Bawu, won the best goalkeeper of the season award for her saves all through the season.
Also special recognition awards were presented to NWFL Premiership major sponsors, Tulcan Energy Resources and Peculiar Ultimate Concerns.
