Super Eagles star set for medicals in Spain
Super Eagles star, Ademola Lookman, is on the verge of joining Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid, after what looked like a sure move to Turkey’s Fenerbahce.
According to reports from Italy, Lookman has reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid and is ready to undergo medical tests with the Colchoneros.
The reports say that Lookman will sign a four-year deal worth €7 million per season. This is despite almost agreeing to an earlier offer from Fenerbahce.
Atletico Madrid is expected to pay €40 million to sign the 28-year-old, which reads as a €35m deal plus €5m add-ons.
Lookman, who was not in Atalanta’s squad for the Serie A match against Como, was expected to travel to Madrid yesterday to undergo medical tests.
The Nigerian international will go down as an Atalanta legend, not only because of his 55 goals in 137 games, but especially for his hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League Final against Bayer Leverkusen, which gave La Dea their first major European trophy.
Atletico Madrid lost Giacomo Raspadori in the summer, and since then, they have been seeking a replacement. Lookman has been on their radar for a while, but it is only in the last few days that their bid to sign him has intensified.
Fenerbahce had been close to agreeing a €40 million deal with Atalanta for Lookman before the Spanish side came into the picture.
But with the arrival of Atletico Madrid on the scene, Lookman made it clear that he preferred to go to Spain.
Reports say that Raspadori’s departure, coupled with recent physical problems for Antoine Griezmann, has left Atletico Madrid short of options in attack.
Diego Simeone has been crying out for new signings in recent weeks, and one is about to be completed.
