Usor, Michael, Adeshina win Austrian Bundesliga title
The 2025/26 season ended for some Nigerian footballers across Europe over the weekend, with a few of them producing a mix of notable performances. While some won silverware, especially Kelechi Iheanacho as Celtic carted home the Scottish Premiership title, a few others scored and also provided assists for their respective clubs.
SCOTLAND Kelechi Iheanacho (Celtic)
Kelechi Iheanacho played a cameo role on Saturday when Celtic won the Scottish Premiership title after coming from behind to beat Heart of Midlothian F.C 3-1 at Celtic Park on the final day of the 2025-26 season.
He was introduced at half-time, as the Nigerian attacker replaced Sebastian Tounekti. Iheanacho who scored from the bench in recent league wins over Dundee, Hibernian and Motherwell completed the season with eight goals in 23 appearances across all competitions.
TURKEY
Wilfred Ndidi (Beşiktaş)
Wilfred Ndidi picked up a yellow card on his return to action from injury on Saturday when Beşiktaş ended its 2025/26 Turkish Süper Lig campaign by playing out a 2-2 draw with Caykur Rizespor at the Çaykur Didi Stadium.
The referee booked Ndidi in the 37th minute of action after which the Nigerian defensive midfielder was yanked off for Junior Olaitan at the restart of the second half.
Having joined Beşiktaş from Leicester City last summer, the Super Eagles captain played 25 Süper Lig matches from which he scored two goals, made an assist and bagged five yellow cards.
ENGLAND
Tolu Arokodare (Wolverhampton Wanderers); Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze (Fulham)
Calvin Bassey made his 100th appearance in the colours of Fulham while Alex Iwobi returned to action from injury as the Cottagers played out a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in Sunday’s Premier League game at the Molineux Stadium.
Iwobi featured for the first time since he picked up a hamstring injury during Fulham’s 0-0 draw with Brentford in a Premier League London derby at the Gtech Community Stadium four weeks ago, precisely on April 18.
In the 67th minute, Iwobi was taken off for Joshua King while Samuel Chukwueze who was also in action for the London-based club replaced Oscar Bobb in the 79th minute. Tolu Arokodare was introduced for Adam Armstrong in the 72nd minute.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles defender Bassey who joined Fulham from Ajax Amsterdam in the summer of 2023 has scored four goals for the club since then, including one this season.
Taiwo Awoniyi, Ola Aina (Nottingham Forest)
Taiwo Awoniyi was in action on Sunday when Nottingham Forest, having already retained its Premier League status lost 3-2 to Manchester United in a five-goal thriller at Old Trafford.
The Nigerian striker was introduced for Chris Wood in the 70th minute but compatriot Ola Aina missed the game due to a knock.
SPAIN
Ademola Lookman (Atlético Madrid)
Ademola Lookman hit the back of the net for a second consecutive La Liga game to hey Atletico Madrid defeat Girona 1-0 in their final home match of the season on Sunday.
The Super Eagles winger had netted a goal in Atletico’s 2-1 win over Osasuna last week but on Sunday, he emerged as the hero after scoring the winner.
Lookman’s 21st minute effort after a brilliant low cross from Antoine Griezmann increased his La Liga tally for the season to four goals in 11 matches, while across all competitions, the 28-year-old has recorded nine goals and three assists for Los Rojiblancos.
Umar Sadiq (Valencia)
Umar Sadiq played for only 17 minutes as Valencia went away to defeat his former club Real Sociedad 4-3 on Sunday to keep their Spanish La Liga survival hopes alive.
The lanky Super Eagles striker came off the bench in the 73rd minute, replacing Hugo Duro as 10-man Valencia scored two late goals to emerge victorious.
GERMANY
Nathan Tella (Bayer Leverkusen); Jordan Torunarigha (Hamburger SV)
Bayer Leverkusen missed Nathan Tella’s attacking prowess on Saturday as the club’s Champions League hopes ended following a 1-1 draw with Hamburger SV in their final match of the 2025/26 German Bundesliga season.
Having become a regular since returning from injury, the Super Eagles winger who has scored a goal and also contributed three assists in his last five Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen missed his second consecutive game against Hamburger due to a muscle problem.
Despite Tella seeing his campaign heavily disrupted by injuries, with the 26-year-old missing the opening seven matches of the season due to a knee bruise and also missing another 10 games with a foot injury as well as muscle problem, he scored one goal and made six assists in 17 Bundesliga appearances this season as Leverkusen will be playing in the UEFA Europa League in the 2026/27 campaign.
Meanwhile, Jordan Torunarigha also featured for Hamburger against Leverkusen, with the Nigerian defender coming off for William Mikelbrencis in the 89th minute, having received a yellow card as early as the 24th minute.
Kevin Akpoguma (TSG Hoffenheim)
Kevin Akpoguma was in action for TSG Hoffenheim for the last time on Saturday as the club’s Champions League hopes ended following a 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in their final match of the 2025/26 German Bundesliga season.
Akpoguma who will be leaving Hoffenheim as a free agent after 13-years when his contract expires this summer was given an opportunity to say his farewell to the club’s fans with the Nigerian defender replacing Bernardo in the 76th minute.
The 31-year-old centre-back had it very tough this season, having had limited playing time, which saw him feature in only eight Bundesliga matches for Hoffenheim, a sharp decline from previous campaigns.
AUSTRIA
Moses Usor, Emmanuel Michael, Adetunji Adeshina (LASK Linz)
Three Nigerian footballers, Moses Usor, Emmanuel Michael and Adetunji Adeshina had reasons to celebrate after winning the Austrian Bundesliga title with LASK Linz following a 3-0 trouncing of Austria Wien in their final game of the season on Sunday.
Usor emerged as LASK’s topscorer, with the 24-year-old scoring in the 4-2 victory over Altach in the Austrian Cup final and bagging a highly impressive 13 goals and five assists in 30 league games.
Nigerian midfielder Michael made seven Austrian league appearances, while Adeshina made his debut for the club in a Bundesliga draw with Hartberg in October 2025.
