Georgia Oboh leaves for France as Jabra Ladies Open beckons
Nigeria’s brightest star in international golf, Georgia Oboh was expected to leave for Europe last night to continue her preparations for the Jabra Ladies Open 2017 – The Evian Championship European Qualifier in France.
Oboh was given a wild card for the competition owing to her recent performances in tournaments across Europe and the Americas as well as her current reputation as one of the brightest youngsters in ladies golf.
The 2015 World Teen Champion has already this year featured in three Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS) tournaments in United States, Portugal and Switzerland and this competition serves as build-up to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.
According to the tournament director, Steve Brangeon, Oboh would compete against top golfers across the globe at the three-day event scheduled to run from June 1 to 3 at the Evian Resort Golf Club, Evian les Bains.
In a statement signed by Brangeon, the organisers said: The Jabra Ladies Open 2017 Committee is delighted to announce you that Georgia Oboh has been awarded a Tournament Invitation for the Jabra Ladies Open 2017 – The Evian Championship European Qualifier. This means that you have been added to the field of the Jabra Ladies Open 2017, which will be held at the Evian Resort Golf Club, Evian les Bains, from the June 1 to 3, 2017.”
It added: “You will receive an email from the LETAS (Ladies European Tour Access Series) within the next few days in order to give you more details about the tournament. We hope that you will enjoy your venue at the Jabra Ladies Open and we wish you a lot of success.”
The Nigerian, who is solely sponsored by her family and some friends of golf, is still searching for sponsorship from both the Ministry of Sports and corporate bodies to continue her upward movement in the game.
Georgia’s father, Godfrey Oboh has been training her at the Ikoyi Club and the Lakowe Golf Resort hoping that they would secure the sponsorship that would help them to keep to her busy programme.
He told The Guardian in a recent interview, “We have approached many companies, including MTN, Airtel, Glo, Dangote and many other companies, but nothing has come out of our efforts so far.”
