The strikers at the 2027 edition of the Nathaniel Idowu U-16 Football League were at their clinical best on the opening day of the league, scoring 22 goals in five matches across Tolu and Oregie centres.

Organised by Peakline Sports World, led by McAnthony Anaelechukwu and sponsored by the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation, the competition provides a platform for grooming Nigeria’s next generation of football talent.

At the New Maracana Sports Complex, defending U-14 champions Fortune FA began their U-16 campaign with a 2–1 win over debutants St Petersburg FA.

St Petersburg stunned the crowd with a goal inside 42 seconds from Tajudeen Abdulrazaq, but Fortune responded in the second half through Ibrahim Olaoye and Odesola Odunayo, last season’s Player of the Tournament, who scored the winner in the 70th minute.

Bright Stars Sports Academy delivered the most emphatic result of the day, defeating Seraphic FC 5–1, with Valentine Aniako scoring four goals, including a second-half hat-trick, while Omotomiwa Odugbesan and Akachukwu Igwe added one each. Aboh Fred netted a consolation for Seraphic.

SC Heritage marked their debut with a 2–2 draw against Moore Wins Foundation FA. Jonathan Norbert scored twice in the final five minutes to cancel out goals from Oyebande Fawaz and Israel Igoh.

At Oregie, Ajegunle United SC and Young Eleven FA settled for a 1–1 draw, with both goals coming from early penalties by Solomon James and Amos Gideon.

The day’s most dramatic contest saw Divinely Blessed FA edge Atico Football Academy 4–3. Ugwuokolie Chidalu scored a hat-trick, including a goal after just six seconds, while Taofeek Saoban added another.

Atico responded with two goals from Timilehin Ajomale and a late strike from Segun Adeyeye, but fell short.

Matchday 2 is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, at the New Maracana Sports Complex and the Nathaniel Idowu Football Pitch.
