Organisers lists 14 events, choose September 27 for SOWEGA kickoff

The Central Working Committee of the South West Games (SOWEGA) has listed 14 events for the event scheduled to begin on September 27 at the University of Ibadan.

Rising from a meeting at the Subomi Balogun International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, the committee comprising directors of sports from 18 tertiary Institutions affirmed that the event will run to October 8, 2021.

It directed interested institutions to pay N200, 000 as participation fees before the end of August.

The committee urged the organisers to work on how to provide accommodation for participating students, “while officials be responsible for their accommodation.”

Among the 14 games listed for the 2021 SOWEGA are football, volleyball, basketball, judo, taekwondo, boxing, athletics, track and field, ayoolopon, scrabble, chess, golf and badminton.

The committee also disclosed, “successful participants be awarded with medals, plaques and cash rewards.

“Accreditation of participants will be done online and manual where necessary.”

“Star athletes, who are undergraduates from participating be allowed to be registered.

“Private participants who can afford to pay participating fee will be allowed to register, provided they agree to contest with invited paramilitary candidates.

The committee also said promoters would be allowed to present their exhibition games, adding, however, that they should concentrate on popularising the game through schools.
