Ruby House wins Emerald High School’s eighth sports meet
Ruby House at the weekend won the eighth inter-house sports competition of the Emerald High School, Ogunrun-ori village, opposite Deeper Life Conference Centre along the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway.
The event, which began with a quartet presentation followed by a presentation by the school band, also featured a colourful march past by the four houses, namely Amber House, Jade House, Opal House and Ruby House.
Parents were also in full flight in the exciting outing, as they took part in the march past and even competed amongst themselves in the 100m parents’ race.
At the end of proceedings, Ruby House took the first position, followed by Jade House. Amber House and Opal House came third and fourth respectively.
It was fun galore with music and fanfare provided by members of the irrepressible Nigeria Sports Supporters Club.
In his address, the Chairman, Board of Governors of the school, Mr. Sam Obaze, said it was the school’s deliberate policy to combine academics with sports in order to develop well groomed students, who are sound mentally and physically.
The Chairman of the occasion and Managing Director, Duro Soleye Hospitals, Dr. Olusegun Odejayi, urged parents to encourage their wards and children to participate in sporting activities. He encouraged the school to continue to build on the sterling performance in academics and commended the management and staff of the school for maintaining an excellent environment that is conducive for learning.
The Principal Senior School, Mr. Emmanuel Achioya, in a welcome address, said Emerald High School was poised to produce the total child through a holistic education programme that recognized the importance of sports in the life of its students. He added that sports instilled lessons essential in the life of a student athlete.
The principal also talked about the academic achievements of the school, saying, “in our uncompromising nature, we have been able to achieve high academic standard ….This is reflected in the enviable results we constantly turn out in our various exams. The IGCSE, Checkpoint, SSCE, NECO, SAT, TOEFL, JAMB, Junior NECO, State exams and what have you.”
He said the school came first in a recent inter-college ICT contest for all public and private schools in Ogun State and has qualified for the second round in the National Olympiad Competition at both junior and senior levels.
A special guest at the event and Nigeria’s Olympic Gold medalist Mr. Enefiok Udo-Obong in a brief remark commended the students for the display of talent. He said he could identify future world champions among the students. According to him, he is a product of school sports and he urged the school to engage technical personnel that will train the athletes and update them about current rules of the game.
