Egypt was not meant for the children of Israel. God promised them a land flowing with milk and honey. They had a space in Goshen, but the place God was taking them was still far away in Canaan. For four hundred and thirty years, they were in Egypt, but that did not automatically make them the rightful owners. In our text, the Bible says, “for the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs.” (Deuteronomy 11:10). It is not a land that you have to work hard, using human idea of irrigation and applying a lot of energy to breed crops for your consumption. “But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven: a land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year” (Deuteronomy 11:11-12).

Some people are moving from place to place, just because they could not find a permanent place of their own. The reason the children of Israel moved to Egypt and occupied Goshen is the same as the reason we rent an apartment to live in today. If you are using all your resources to make the rented house comfortable for living, you are wasting them. That house is not yours; sooner or later; you will leave the apartment and another person will occupy it. If you have gotten somewhere to live in, then start planning how to get your own. Start saving towards being a landlord. You can’t live in someone’s house forever. Pray for God’s help as the Israelites prayed for the Promised Land.

No matter how comfortable the place may be, no matter how loveable and accommodating the landlord may be, when your time is up, you must leave. Even if you succeed in living there for many years, the landlord would challenge you one day: “ I hope you are not trying to take my house from me. You should be planning to go to your own house by now, or you want to die in my house?” Don’t wait until you are told to leave. Work towards building your own. Long years in Egypt did not make Goshen Israelites’ possession.

“It is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven: a land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even to the end of the year”. There are places in life that we occupy, but they are not for us. It could be an apartment, office or environment: physical or spiritual that we are not meant to be. Such places are preventing us from getting the promises of God fulfilled in our lives. If as a child of God, you are a business partner with a child of the devil, for instance, you will pray for God’s blessing upon your business. But Proverbs 10:16 says; “the labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin” and chapter 13 verse 20 also says; “he that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed”. If you get involved in anything with a devilish man, as a child of God, what do you expect from God? To bless both of you? Then why did the bible say, “wherefore, come out from among them”? You don’t need anybody to tell you that you are in a wrong place.

Proverbs 26:2; “As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.” If you remain in the will of God and you are obedient, then you are entitled to the fulfilment of His promises in your life.

Every promise of God, as the covenant God made with the children of Israel, is preceded by ‘If.’
