Owe no man – Part 2

We must endeavour to manage our affairs with this philosophy as much as possible, try balance accounts with all who have legitimate demands upon us, except it be with respect to that debt, which while you pay, you will nevertheless still owe, namely, to love one another. (8) This is an eternal debt, which we can never sufficiently discharge. Yet, if it is rightly performed, in a sense discharges all the rest.

Christiano Ronaldo, when he received one of his awards sometime ago, dedicated it to a certain man named “Alberto Fantrau.” Then he said: “Yes, I am a great footballer and all my success is due to my friend, Alberto good heart.” The People around wondered and said, “Who is this Mr. Fantrau?” Then Ronaldo went on: “We played together in a youth team. When Sporting of Lisbon recruiters came to observe us, they told us that the striker who scored the most goals would be recruited into the sports academy. That day, we won 3-0. I scored the first goal and then Albert scored the second with the head. And then the third goal was the one that impressed everyone.”

According to Ronaldo, Alberto started from the wing, then found himself face to face with the keeper, dribbled the goalkeeper and all he had to do was to push the ball into the empty goal post. In the meantime, Ronaldo was running to his side and instead of shooting into the empty goal post, Alberto decided to pass the ball to him and he scored. This was how Ronaldo found himself at the Sporting Lisbon Academy. After the game, Ronaldo went to him, and asked him, “Why did you do that?” He replied, “Because I know that you are better than I am, and you will go far in life in this game. You needed that push.”

Curious to know more, journalists began to investigate and they were able to meet Alberto Fantrau to ask him if the story told by Ronaldo was true, and he confirmed it. He also added that his career as a footballer ended after that match, as it was the only opportunity to become a professional, but he was sure Ronaldo would go far and do better. So, he remained unemployed, yet fulfilled and happy. However, journalists, observing his luxurious house and his fleet of cars parked in the garage asked Alberto, “But you are unemployed. How could you have such a house and cars and living so luxuriously? You seem rather comfortable physically.” Alberto’s answer was, “All that? It is Ronaldo. He shared them with me.”

Dear Fathers and Mothers, Brothers and Sisters, Sons and Daughters, is there someone you owe duties, services, gratitude, vows or responsibilities? Make every effort to pay up. Owe no man.
