Introduction
When you look at the Bible, the phrase, “the Lord’s Servant/the Servant of the Lord is used for some specific persons. In the Bible, there are some individuals who were called the Servant of the Lord. Some of them are:
• Abraham – Gen. 26:24. Abraham had special favour with God as the Lord’s servant.
• Moses – Num. 12:7-8 – Moses was said to be faithful in all God’s house. He was privileged to see and speak with the Lord face to face.
• Caleb-Num. 14:24 – Caleb had a different spirit. He followed the Lord fully.
• David-2 Sam. 3:18, 7:5-8 – God promised to bring salvation through David. He received timely message from God.
• Job-Job.2: 3. Job was blameless, upright, feared God, shunned evil and held fast to his integrity.
In our passage today, Jacob, who was renamed Israel was also called the Lord’s Servant, chosen by God and helped by Him.

Marks Of The Lord’s Servant
A thorough look at the list of the men above will make one to wonder what really made them the Lord’s servants. It is clear that there is no direct reference to service in all these scriptures, unlike what many focus on today. To be the Lord’s servant is, therefore, not a matter of what you can do for God, but who you are to Him. It is not a matter of how well you can serve, but how well your life conforms to the image of God. Therefore, the three common marks of the Lord’s servant seen in all these people are:

• Submission – Allowing God to have His way in our lives.

• Suffering – The readiness to suffer for God and His work. It is not those who are looking for titles or position of authority.

• Sacrifice -Those who are ready to make sacrifices, their comfort, their time, their resources and even their lives to the service of the Master.
Without any doubt, these are the true biblical keys to greatness in God’s Kingdom. May we find such men and women who have genuinely submitted to God, ready to suffer for Him and willing to sacrifice for Him.

Conclusion
In God’s Kingdom, what makes a man or woman the Lord’s servant is not service, but following the Lord fully. It is not about your capability/ability, but about your personality and commitments unto Him. After all, He can enable the weakest among men to do the greatest work for Him. For anyone to be the Lord’s Servant, he must follow the Lord fully after given his life unto the Lord. (John 12:26) Are you one of the Lord’s Servants?
