Text: Mk 10:46-52; Rom 9:15
Mercy can be defined as compassion or forgiveness shown towards someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm. God’s mercy is what gives meaning to life. Without mercy, your destiny will be totally mess-up. It is not your make-up that makes you, but it is the mercy of God. God’s mercy puts you in a class of your own. When God’s mercy is in operation in your life, your location does not matter because mercy will bring your allocation to your location. In the heat of famine in 1 Kg. 17:3-6, God provided for Elijah daily.
In our Bible text also, we see that when mercy is speaking in the life of a man, people cannot understand or explain how it works. Everyone needs the mercy of God to be successful in life. Blind Bartemaeus had been on that highway for so many years begging to survive but only one encounter of God’s mercy turned his life around. You don’t earn mercy but it is given to men according to the will of God. That is why God said He will have mercy on whom he chooses to show mercy, Rom. 9:15. Mercy is likened to a well of water, from the well of mercy, you can fetch forgiveness, love, healing, truth, goodness and every other thing that will help us in our Christian journey.
God’s mercy has a lot of attributes. It is great and very sure. The mercies of God are abundant, enough to last for everlasting. The mercies of God are also described as tender, Psa. 25:6. Another attribute of God’s mercies is that they are new every morning, Lam. 3:22. The story in our bible passage depicts the mystery and wonders of God’s mercy. When mercy is at work, it suspends all existing protocols in a place. The one who is the last can suddenly become the first. Mercy can also over-rule judgement as in the case of the woman caught in the act of adultery, John 8:3-11. It looks beyond your sin, guilt, shame and covers your errors.
Mercy also brings restoration as in the case of blind Bartimeaus whose sight was restored. It brings speedy answers to your prayers. Men tried to shut the blind man down but God heard him and answered him. Psa. 27:7 says; “Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.” Mercy turns your mistakes to miracle and it can single you out of the crowd for favour. In John 5:1-10, there was a multitude of impotent folks gathered at the pool but when Jesus came there, only one man was healed. This is mercy at work. When your set time comes, every person and everything will work in your favour. Mercy precedes favour and gives you access into the place you ordinarily cannot enter.
God’s mercy is a complete package that comes with deliverance Psa. 86:13, it holds men from slipping and silences your adversaries. It makes them change their testimonies about you. This season, God will arise for you in His mercy to cause your mockers to bow before you in Jesus’ name. To access God’s mercy, you must learn to trust in Him, Psa. 32:10. Put your hope in Him and cry for mercy like blind Bartimeaus did. The cry for mercy commands heaven’s attention. Finally, love truth and righteousness.
