The 10 commandments were given by God and He instructed us to obey them.
The following are the commandments:
I am the LORD thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before me; Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain; Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy; Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee; Thou shalt not kill; Thou shalt not commit adultery; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour; Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

Giving a rundown, we are to worship God alone; we must not make any graven image; the name of God must not be taken in vain; the Sabbath day must be honored; honour your parents; do not commit murder; say no to stealing; don’t bear false witness; Your neighbours’ possession must not be coveted by you. Simply put, do not take what doesn’t belong to you or imagine how beautiful it is to own it.

The 10 commandments establish and remind us of God’s authority and importance. The moral significance of these laws is clear. We were created to worship Him alone. You cannot use the name of the Lord without reverence, as false idols are prohibited. Learning to respect God’s authority makes us to respect and honour all His commandments.

The 10 commandments were summarised by Jesus in Matthew 22: 36-40, when one of the Pharisees, a lawyer, asked a question to tempt Him. “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matthew 22:36-40). If you love God, you will obey all His commandments with all your heart.

The love for God is the foundation of a relationship with Him. You must love Him, not just with your outward action, but with your whole being. The love for God is not about emotions, but rather loyalty and obedience from within you and outside. Jesus told His disciples in John 14:15 that if you love me, keep my commandments. God also wants us to love each other as He has loved us. Doing the right thing in the sight of God is obedience. It’s a lifestyle characterised by walking with God. Through the forgiveness we have found by the death of Christ on the cross, we have to live in newness of life. We must be engaged in good works, because God has called us for such. We must reciprocate the love Jesus gave to us by dying on the cross, to mankind. Loving everyone is total obedience to God, and it reflects the true nature of Christ.
