Text: Acts 9:36-42

[36] Now, there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and almsdeeds, which she did.

[37] And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.

[38] And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay coming to them.

[39] Then Peter arose and went with them. When he came, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

[40] But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.

[41] And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.

[42] And it was known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.

Verse 36 tells us that she “was always doing good and helping the poor.” She was a doer, not just a talker! And in verse 39, we are told about the particular ministry, which occupied so much was “she made robes and other clothing” Take note that Dorcas was a lady who was full of good works. When Dorcas died we read that:

Some of the women folk ministered by washing her body and laying it in an upper room. Verse 37 says two unnamed men ministered by going on an errand to Lydda to fetch Peter, verse 38.

Peter came and prayed a special prayer of faith.

Dorcas was committed in services to God and to the people so much so that when she died, because of the things she has done, they went and fetched Peter, not to come and raise her up from death but to also come and pray on her corpse, so they can bury her. But when Peter got there, the people started sharing testimonies of how good Dorcas had been to them. This was what provoked Peter to pray for Dorcas to come back to life because such a good person is needed among God’s people, he refused to allow such a giver die like that. And God heard Peter and Dorcas came back to life. And because of this, the gospel began to spread in Joppa. What a testimony!

As a child of God, what do you have on the ground and will speak for you in times of trouble? Your own case might not be death; you might be in need of a job, money and so on. Have you done good things that can make someone speak for you? Can your way of living bring people to Christ? If not, you can start from today, do good to everyone you come in contact with, for by so doing, you are imitating Jesus.
