Text: Daniel 5:1-31
Key Verse: Daniel 5:2, “Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.” (KJV)

God dealt with Nebuchadnezzar to the extent that he was driven into the bush to live with wild beast until he knew that the Most High God ruled in the kingdom of men. He learnt his lesson and humbled himself. There are people today who think they are God and some of such people are in politics, business, military and even in the church. How can a man be God? No, you cannot be God no matter who you are. Now came Nebuchadnezzar’s son, Belshazzar who despite the experiences of his father desecrated the holy vessels of God kept in the temple by using them to drink wine and sundries. He amused himself and gathered his wives and concubines during their blasphemous feasting and festivities. The party degenerated and everyone worshipped their false gods (Daniel 5:3-4).

Belshazzar was a very immoral man; he had no respect for God, he had no honour for God and he failed to recognise God. Some of those monarchs in the days past and even some of the monarchs today made themselves believe that they were gods.

This affront to God by Belshazzar did not go unnoticed and while he was doing all these, a human hand appeared out of nowhere to write a few words on the wall saying: “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.” When King Belshazzar saw this, he was so afraid that his knees were bumping into each other. None out of all the wisemen in the kingdom could interpret the inscription. The queen then came and told the king about Prophet Daniel, who had interpreted some of Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams. The king summoned Daniel and asked him to read and interpret the inscription on the wall.

Daniel said to the king, ‘Mene’ means that God Has numbered your kingdom and it is ending tonight. Even your very life is in His Hands, your going out and coming in is in His Hands. He allows it for His Grace and for His great love. That night, Babylon was taken over by the Medes and the Persians. ‘Tekel’ means you are weighed in God’s balances and you are found wanting. ‘Peres’ means thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. Daniel said to the king, but look at it, you have no spiritual weight and you weigh nothing in God’s Balances.

God is not going to weigh you in the political balances of your country. We have so many parties and the parties could be singing one song even when they know that somebody weighs nothing. God is not going to weigh you in business balances; He is not going to weigh you in military balances or whatever. He is not going to weigh you even in the church balances.

God has His own balances where He weighs everyone. He weighs actions, intentions, thoughts and words. He weighs relationships and everything. You cannot be balanced in God’s Scale if you refuse to confess your sins so that you may be forgiven and be born again; if you refuse to be recreated or become a new creature. You cannot be balanced if you refuse to be transformed by the power of God so that all those nasty things the devil has been doing in your life will come to an end. Anyone and everyone who refused to give his/her life to Jesus Christ will absolutely weigh nothing on God’s scale. This is the truth and I tell you this truth out of the love of God in my heart.
