The Official Rate Is Not the Rate You Pay: cheqfx Shows African Businesses What Money Is Really Worth on the Ground

The rate-comparison platform says its users have avoided millions in hidden currency losses by checking official, bank, fintech and parallel-market rates side by side.

In many African markets, the exchange rate printed on a bank website and the rate at which dollars actually change hands can be very far apart. Businesses that plan, price and pay suppliers using the official figure often find out the true cost only after the money has moved. cheqfx.com, a rates platform built for these markets, was created to close that gap.

cheqfx publishes official, bank, fintech and parallel-market rates for African currencies in one place, alongside crypto and stablecoin prices, so that a trader, a remittance sender or a finance team can see every rate that matters before acting. More than hundred thousand people and businesses now use it, and the company estimates they have avoided $3.64 million in fees and rate losses.

THE PROBLEM: VOLATILE MARKETS AND ONE MISLEADING NUMBER

In markets such as Malawi and Sudan, the official rate often says little about what a dollar costs in practice. Supply is tight, conditions change quickly, and the street rate can move while the official rate stays still. Anyone who needs real dollars, rather than a number on a screen, is exposed to the difference.

Until recently there was no single, trusted place to see that difference. Businesses relied on the official rate, or on a message from a contact, and by the time the real cost became clear, the loss was already on the books.

WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE IN PRACTICE

Two illustrations, using round numbers for clarity. They are examples of a common pattern, not individual customer accounts.

The importer. A company budgets a $50,000 equipment order using the official rate. When it comes to settle the supplier, the dollars have to be sourced at a much higher local price. Costed at the real rate, the order needs a far larger local-currency budget than planned, and the margin the company quoted to its own customers is gone before the goods arrive.

The remittance and payout business. A firm pays out in local currency at a rate based on the official figure. Customers quickly notice the gap to the street rate and move to informal channels, taking volume with them. The firm lost revenue because it could not see what the market was doing.

In both cases the mistake was not carelessness. The information was simply not available in one place.

HOW CHEQFX CHANGES THAT

Every rate, side by side. Official, bank, fintech and parallel-market rates for each currency, so the spread is visible at a glance.

Pricing in the base you use. Rates can be viewed per USD, GBP, EUR or CAD.

Provider comparison. Users can see how individual banks and fintechs price the same transfer and choose the cheaper route.

Crypto and stablecoin context. Live crypto prices and detail pages help users who move value through digital assets.

Built for teams. Businesses can embed live rates on their own sites and apps through cheqfx embeds and the rates API.

“A rate is only useful if it is the one you can actually transact at. Our users were not short of data. They were short of the right data, in one place, early enough to act on it. That is what we set out to fix,” said Olayinka, Lead Engineer, cheqfx.

“In volatile markets the gap between the official and real rate is where businesses lose money,” said Juliet Nwakwoke, Product Lead at cheqfx. “We design every screen around one question: can someone see the true cost of a transaction in seconds? If they can, they make a better decision.”

WHO IT IS FOR

Individuals who track currencies and want a clear view of local markets.

Importers, exporters and SMEs that pay suppliers or staff across borders.

Remittance, payments and fintech companies that need accurate reference rates.

Banks and bureaux de change that want their rates listed and compared fairly.

cheqfx is free to use at cheqfx.com. Banks, fintechs and bureaux de change can apply to be listed at cheqfx.com/get-listed.
