How My Childhood Shaped My Career
Growing up, I had to mature quickly, which built resilience and empathy in me. These qualities have been essential in helping me connect with vulnerable characters. At the same time, my youth’s joy and fun still live with me. I’m a big kid at heart, and I’m excited to hopefully do some comedy work soon!
Defining Moment in My Career
It’s so hard to pinpoint just one defining moment in my career because each booking feels like a blessing that leads to more. Every opportunity has been humbling, and I’m grateful for each one. But if I had to choose, The Life Coach was a game-changer for me. It brought new depth to my craft and opened doors I didn’t even know were possible.
Jennifer in The Life Coach; Emotional Depth and Humor
Bringing Jennifer to life was such an exciting challenge! There were parts of her that I could really connect with. While I’m not someone who takes myself too seriously, I could definitely relate to her vulnerability. The desire to be chosen is something we all feel at some point, and I think that resonates with everyone. The Life Coach captures that beautifully, and I was able to tap into those emotions.
From Essex to Toronto – My Journey as an Actor
Moving from Essex to Toronto at the age of 18 was a huge turning point for me. It helped me develop a thicker skin and adapt to the constant changes in this industry. That big move exposed me to so many different people and cultures, which expanded my view of the world and shaped my growth as an actor.
What Being a Woman of Rubies Means to Me
As a girl’s girl, being recognized as a Woman of Rubies is truly an honor. To be celebrated alongside so many inspiring women is something I deeply value. It’s empowering to be part of a community that uplifts and amplifies the voices of women everywhere, and I’m so grateful to be a part of that.
Representation in the Industry – My Vision
I’m passionate about diversity because it brings authenticity to storytelling. There are so many stories left to tell, and I truly believe we’re heading in the right direction. Representation matters, and it’s exciting to see the industry evolve in ways that highlight the richness of our different experiences.
Landing the Nationwide Aveeno Commercial – How It Felt
Landing the Aveeno commercial was such a special moment in my career! It was the first time I saw my work on the big screen at Cineplex, and it even reached my friends across the world. The whole experience was amazing – the shoot was fun, the crew was fantastic, and it’s still one of my favorite projects to date.
Three Women Who Inspire Me
Samora Smallwood: She’s been a mentor, coach, and friend to me for over five years. Her unapologetic approach to her dreams and her advocacy for positive change continuously inspire me.
Greta Gerwig: I admire her unique approach to directing. She listens to scenes as they’re shot, focusing on rhythm rather than just visuals. Her work is groundbreaking, and I’d love the opportunity to collaborate with her one day.
Patricia Bebia: The writer, director, and producer of The Life Coach, Patricia is someone I respect deeply. She’s not only courageous and kind but also incredibly talented. I’m so grateful for the special connection we’ve built.
Advice for Aspiring Actors
My advice? Patience is key! Surround yourself with people who believe in you and support your journey, community is vital in this career. And most importantly, never forget your “why.” I have known since I was a little girl that acting is what I wanted to do. Whenever it gets tough, I remember little Maria cheering me on and it helps me keep going.
Causes I’m Passionate About
I’m deeply passionate about equality. No matter your identity, gender, sexual orientation, or background, everyone deserves an equal chance. Real change comes when we embrace openness and remember that, at the end of the day, we all enter and leave this world the same way.
Exciting Upcoming Projects
I recently worked on a limited series for Paramount about the story of JonBenét Ramsey. It was a dream come true, and I’m so humbled to be sharing the screen with actors I have admired for years. Stay updated on the release by checking out my IMDb.
