Police nab gang after suspect leaves phone at crime scene in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested four suspected armed robbers who allegedly terrorised residents around the V.I.O. office area along Jos Road in Bauchi metropolis.

The suspects were tracked down after one of them mistakenly left his mobile phone behind during a robbery operation.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the Command received a complaint from one Everest Jonathan, a resident of Behind V.I.O Office, along Jos Road, who reported that at about 2:10 a.m. on November 11, 2025, a gang of five armed robbers broke into his residence and carted away valuables.

The stolen items included an Android smartphone, a keypad phone, a travelling bag, two pairs of sneakers, clothes and other personal belongings.

“Upon receiving the report at about 3:40 a.m., detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Holman Simon, swiftly visited the scene, assessed the situation and launched an investigation,” the statement said.

Preliminary findings revealed that the suspect, Alhassan Jibrin, 20, of the Danjuma Goje area, abandoned his phone at the scene. This crucial evidence led to the arrest of three other suspects: Lawan Adamu, Lawan Idris, and Muhammad Yau, also known as Madugu.

During interrogation, the suspects confessed to conspiring and carrying out several robbery operations in the area, targeting residents during late-night hours.

Recovered exhibits include a travelling bag, two sets of clothes, two pairs of sneakers, two sharp cutlasses, an Android phone, a keypad phone and two torchlights, among other items.

The Police Command said efforts are ongoing to arrest other gang members still at large.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further discreet investigation. The suspects will be profiled and charged in court upon completion of the investigation.
