Lagos State government on Monday officially launched the Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry (LGHGR), as part of efforts to deepen environmental sustainability journey of the state.

 

In his welcome address at the launch, the General Manager of Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Babatunde Ajayi described the launch as a landmark achievement which further demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Lagos State government, under the visionary leadership Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, to building a resilient, climate-smart, and low-carbon economy.

 

According to him, with the launch, Lagos becomes the first sub-national government in Nigeria to establish a comprehensive Greenhouse Gas Registry.

 

“Climate change is no longer a distant environmental concern; it is a present-day reality affecting our health, economy, infrastructure, biodiversity, and the overall well-being of our people.

 

“Addressing this challenge requires credible data, coordinated action, and strong institutional frameworks. The Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry has therefore been developed as a strategic platform to accurately measure, monitor, report, and verify greenhouse gas emissions across critical sectors of our economy.”

 

Ajayi stated that the registry will strengthen evidence-based policymaking, improve transparency and accountability, support climate reporting obligations, facilitate carbon market opportunities, and enhance investor confidence in Lagos State’s climate initiatives. More importantly, it provides a reliable foundation for informed decision-making as we work towards achieving our climate commitments and sustainable development aspirations.

 

“This achievement would not have been possible without the strategic partnership and technical collaboration of TPHG, whose expertise and dedication have contributed immensely to the successful development of this pioneering initiative. On behalf of LASEPA and the Lagos State Government, I express our sincere appreciation for this productive partnership.

The launch of the Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry is not the end of a journey but the beginning of a new era of climate accountability, collaboration, and measurable action.

 

“I therefore call on government institutions, the private sector, development partners, researchers, industries, and every stakeholder to embrace this platform and work collaboratively towards reducing emissions, improving environmental performance, and creating a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Lagos for present and future generations.”
