Phyna makes history as Gyimah dethrones Appah in Lagos boxing show

Pyna celebrates her win at Independence Day Chaos In The Ring bout.

Reality television star Josephina “Phyna” Otabor made history on Wednesday after knocking out actress Nkechi Blessing in Nigeria’s first female celebrity boxing bout at Balmoral Promotions’ Chaos in the Ring in Lagos.

Phyna stopped Nkechi Blessing in their scheduled four-round contest at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, to claim victory and a ₦50 million prize.

The former Big Brother Naija winner wasted little time calling for another celebrity showdown, challenging Nollywood actress Etinosa Idemudia, who watched the fight from ringside.

“I came in, and I kept my cool and did the thing. Now I would like to fight Etinosa. I think it is time I teach her a lesson,” Phyna said after the bout.

Etinosa accepted the challenge, saying: “I have been advising you to carry the Edo name with pride. We do not run from any fight. I accept the challenge fully.”

Phyna also suggested that the victory could be the beginning of a professional boxing career.

In another celebrity bout, skit maker Carter Efe maintained his unbeaten record in the Chaos in the Ring series after defeating musician Speed Darlington by technical knockout.

Efe dominated the four-round contest before the referee stopped the fight after Speed Darlington stopped moving.

The victory came five months after Efe defeated singer Habeeb “Portable” Badmus by unanimous decision at Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, on May 1.

All three judges scored that three-round contest 30-27 in Efe’s favour.

The rivalry between Efe and Speed Darlington had escalated in the build-up to Wednesday’s fight, with both entertainers trading hostile remarks before settling their differences in the ring.

But the night’s biggest upset came in the main event, where Ghanaian Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah dethroned Nigerian champion Godday “Zodsolo” Appah by unanimous decision.

Gyimah claimed the WBO African Light Heavyweight Continental Championship after judges awarded him the decision over Appah.

The Chaos in the Ring event combined celebrity clashes with professional boxing, attracting entertainers and fighters for a night of high-profile contests.

The event was broadcast live on SuperSport and DAZN and powered by Bet9ja.
