NSIL confab to appraise efficacy of int’l law

Prof. Yinka Omorogbe SAN

The Nigerian Society of International Law (NSIL) is set to review the effectiveness and implementation of international law in contemporary international relations during its 47th annual conference coming up on October 13 to 14.

Billed for the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos, the conference, themed “From Obligations to Implementation: Reassessing the Efficacy of International Law in Contemporary International Relations,” will feature speakers from Nigeria and other African countries, including Prof. Carol Ngang of Lesotho, who will speak on the right to development.

Addressing newsmen yesterday ahead of the event, the NSIL President, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, said the conference would examine how international obligations translate into practical benefits for citizens and states.

She explained that international law affects virtually every aspect of modern life, including telecommunications, international trade, development financing, human rights, movement across borders and international cooperation.

The conference would also examine the relevance of international law against the backdrop of changing global politics, including shifts in the approach of major powers to issues such as climate change, development assistance and international cooperation, she noted.

Responding to a question about Nigeria’s capacity to implement international laws and treaties, she argued that capacity alone was not the country’s major problem, but also the systems and processes through which laws are implemented.
