Nike Art Gallery Abuja presents Beyond the Gallery, an Artist Spotlight initiative dedicated to celebrating exceptional talents and bringing the stories, creative practices, and perspectives of Abuja-based artists to a wider audience.
Featured in this spotlight is Abuja-based contemporary figurative painter Emmanuel Joshua Obile, whose expressive paintings explore identity, memory, self-discovery, and the complexities of human experience. Through expressive brushwork and figurative portraiture, his practice examines the inner conversations we have with ourselves and how our experiences, emotions, and encounters influence the people we become.
Obile’s works invite viewers to look beyond physical appearances and consider the thoughts, memories, and feelings that often remain unspoken. His approach reflects an interest in the relationship between our inner worlds and the experiences we carry, recognising that personal growth and self-understanding are shaped by both our reflections and our interactions with the world around us.
Through Conversations Within I–IV, Self I and II, and The Bearer II, Obile explores these ideas from different perspectives. While the works encourage introspection and a deeper understanding of the self, they also create room for viewers to connect with their own experiences and interpretations. Together, the works reflect on the ongoing process of understanding ourselves and the lasting influence of the moments, relationships, and experiences that shape our identities.
