The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has donated copies of its recently published book, titled ‘Truth, Trust, and the Future of Journalism in Nigeria’ to the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, University of Lagos.
The book, edited by a team of scholars and professionals including Prof Chinyere Stella Okunna, Dr. Tony Onyima, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, Dr. Kabir Alabi Garba and former General Secretary of the Guild, Angela Agoawike, has contributions from distinguished voices across print, broadcast and digital media, examining the critical challenges confronting journalism in an era of declining public trust and contested truth.
In her foreword, the Director, Institute of Continuing Education and former Head, Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, Prof. Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, described the book as an urgent emergency response to address a critical void in contemporary media literature by asking how journalism preserves its democratic soul when truth itself is under siege.
She commended the Guild for bringing unassailable institutional authenticity to the book.
“Without doubt, when the Guild speaks on truth, public trust, ethics and sustainability, it speaks with collective weight of centuries of combined newsroom leadership, historical memory and moral authority,” she said.
Receiving copies of the book alongside faculty members, the Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Prof. Oloruntola Sunday, described the donation as a meaningful bridge between the industry and the academia. He said the book offers a clear-eyed vision of journalism’s future and reaffirmed the faculty’s commitment to making full use of the resource, particularly in teaching professional ethics.
He described the gesture as a form of collaboration between the town and gown, urging more of such efforts to assist the students of journalism and those practising in sustaining the integrity of the profession in the society.
He said: “So this one will go a long way in helping our students, especially in the area of ethics, and I promise that we are going to make very good use of it.”
Earlier, the Guild’s Vice President (West) and Editor of weekend titles of The Guardian who led a team of the NGE to the faculty, underscored the professional body’s role as a defender of truth and promoter of ethical standards.
He expressed confidence that the book will serve academics, students and practising journalists alike by confronting the pressing issues facing the profession today.
