Plus-Size-2

Fashion blogger and enthusiast Tolu Precious spoke with The Guardian exclusively about dressing for a plus-sized figure. According to Precious, many Nigerian women are plus-sized and though a lot of women and men are jumping on the fitfam wagon, that doesn’t still eliminate the fact that many of us aren’t size 8 or 10.

Speaking further, she says it is important to always put your best fashion foot forward, no matter what size you are, as the benefits are innumerable. According to her, if you feel overly conscious when dressing up, it is time to quell those unnecessary anxieties.

“Dressing plus-sized women is no longer an issue. So many top brands, designers and even affordable designers are creating amazing line of clothes for them. Looking frumpy because you don’t know/have what to wear is no longer an acceptable excuse now. This has opened up opportunities for plus size women to look equally chic and glamorous as their size 0-10 counterparts. I believe every woman deserves to look good no matter her size.”

She goes ahead to lists vital style elements that should be followed:
Body shape: The body shape plays an important role when selecting outfits because a voluptuous woman can be apple or pear shaped. Women with apple-shaped bodies are generally heavier up when compared to their lower portion, while the reverse is the case for women with pear shaped bodies. Clothes should be selected with this fact in mind to give balance and proportion to the complete body shape.

Slim is the way to go: Choose clothes that make you look slimmer. A-line gowns complement a plus sized body beautifully and work great with both apple and pear shaped bodies.

Darken it up: It is a well known fact that dark colours look great on all body types as they tend to make you look slimmer. That doesn’t mean you should ditch the coloured clothes just yet, just team up dark and light colours interestingly to achieve the desired look. It is recommended that apple-shaped women should wear dark colours on the top and light colours at the bottom whereas the pear-shaped women should wear dark colours for the bottom and light colours for the top. This facilitates in accentuating the desired areas and wisely covering up the flawed areas. However, do not wear contrasting colours for tops and bottoms. Choose homogeneous colours.

Stripes: Dresses with vertical stripes are a good choice for plus size women as they give you a slimmer impression. However, dresses with horizontal lines should be avoided as it adds to the width of your body. Dresses and tops with a V-shaped neckline is another option for all plus size women as this opens up your neckline and makes your upper part look elongated. Pleated pants and sheaths should be avoided at all cost.
