Wardrobe organization tips
Most people have wardrobes in their homes but have no idea how to really use them. Most times, the wardrobes are mostly unused or left in disarray and clothes and accessories are thrown in without any thought, leaving the owner engaging in a frantic search when a particular item is needed. It really doesn’t matter if the wardrobe is the size of a whole room or not, if it is left disorganized, it would be difficult, if not impossible for it to serve any useful purpose.
We have put together basic steps in wardrobe arrangement to guide you and if you follow these steps religiously, you’re already 90% on your way to achieving the closet of your dreams.
Hang it
As much as it is possible, use the same type of hangers for all your clothes. Apart from the fact that is aesthetically appealing, it instantly lends an air of organization to your closet.
Place frequently worn items at the easiest point of access. If you wear suits everyday, they should be front and centre in the wardrobe. Otherwise, group clothing by type. All trousers and skirts, dress shirts, short-sleeve shirts and gowns should be in one spot.
Protect special-occasion items like tuxedos and dinner gowns in fabric clothing bags. If articles have been dry-cleaned, remove the plastic bag so the cleaning chemicals won’t cause deterioration.
Fold it
Fold and stack jeans, T-shirts, undergarments and workout wear. Instead of using drawers, place folded items on closet shelves where they’re easier to see.
If you have the space, sort clothes by colour and rotate according to how you wear.
Use trays set out on shelves to keep accessories organized and accessible. Layer bow ties and pocket squares, but roll up ties. That way, they’re never wrinkled, and the patterns are visible. In the same tray, toss cuff links into open boxes for quick coordination.
Roll belts and socks and store them in separate trays.
Stuff it
Keep special-occasion footwear in clear shoeboxes. For everyday pairs, a horizontal shoe rack on the closet floor will hold more pairs, especially if there’s room for two side by side.
Handbags are best protected when lined up on a shelf, stuffed with tissue paper and stored in their dust bags.
Store it or toss it
Fold items not often worn like native wears, aso oke’s and store in suitcases.
Sort clothing into piles-jeans, casuals, dresses, suits, T-shirts and so on. Ask yourself when each item was last worn, if it’s still your style and if it’s in good condition. If the answers raise issues, chances are it should be donated or binned.
