July 26 is National Intern Day, and for many young people starting out in the corporate world as an intern, it could be an exciting yet scary experience. This is because you’re in a new environment, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, and responsible for certain tasks that you’re not skilled at.

However, an internship can be a valuable opportunity to gain real-world experience, make connections, and potentially be offered a full-time role after your internship ends.
To help you make the most of your internship, here are six tips for settling into a new job as an intern.
1. Get to know your teammates
Start by taking the time to introduce yourself to your teammates. Introduce yourself, ask about their experiences, and build an amicable relationship. Taking the initiative to build relationships with your teammates can help you feel more comfortable and welcome in the office environment.

2. Understand your duties
There’s nothing more frustrating than an intern who doesn’t care to fulfill their duties. Make sure you have a clear idea of what your role as an intern entails. You can do this by looking at the department you are fixed into, what do they do? What are their typical responsibilities? Taking control of your tasks will show them your commitment and seriousness to the job.
3. Ask questions
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It’s better to ask for clarification than to do the wrong thing, or not do anything at all. As an intern, no one really expects you to deliver expert level work, but don’t hesitate to ask questions whenever you’re unsure about something.
Additionally, if you’re given a task to do, ensure to follow through and deliver before the deadline.

5. Find a mentor
After spending a month or two, you should be able to identify someone that can mentor you. This person should typically be within your team and should provide you with guidance and support. A mentor can help you navigate the corporate world and help you with your professional development.
6. Network
Make good use of your internship as a networking opportunity. Do so by attending company events, connecting with people from different departments, and collaborating with other teams. Doing this can not only expand your knowledge, but it can bring opportunities for you down the line.
