The National Human Rights Commission (NHC) on Friday in Abuja said it would ensure that the rights of every citizen was protected as they go out to exercise their franchise in the February and March elections.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission Mr Tony Ojukwu made the assertion in an interview with newsmen.

“ We have created that awareness that in every election, human rights commission is there to monitor the activities and conduct of every security personnel who is deployed in the field.

“And, that for us is good enough, because we had trained them in the past, we had told them look, we are in the field just to monitor how you are doing.

“ So, we think that helps to curtail their excesses, to make sure that people’s rights are not violated, to make people have free space to exercise their right to vote, which you know is very important.

“The right to participate in governance is a key aspect of our democracy and we want to deepen it, we want to make sure that people exercise that right without any molestation, without any violation of their rights.”

Ojukwu said that plans were underway to validate the 2019 to 2022 Strategic Plan to inject fresh ideas into the commission, particularly by building the capacity of staff for effective performance.
