The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, has called on Nigerians to remain committed to democratic principles and continue supporting the administration of President Bola Tinubu as the country navigates ongoing economic and security challenges.
In a statement marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Abiru described the occasion as an important moment for reflection on Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that the country has sustained uninterrupted democratic governance for 27 years.
The lawmaker said the anniversary offers an opportunity to assess the nation’s progress, celebrate democratic gains, and recommit to the values that underpin democratic governance and national development.
He said Nigeria’s democratic endurance reflects the strength of its institutions, the sacrifices of pro-democracy advocates, and the confidence of citizens in democracy as the preferred system of government.
Abiru paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle and other activists whose efforts contributed to the restoration and preservation of democratic rule in the country.
According to him, principles such as justice, freedom, inclusiveness and adherence to the rule of law remain critical to building a stable and prosperous nation.
The senator also expressed support for the Federal Government’s reform agenda, urging citizens to rally behind ongoing efforts aimed at economic renewal and national transformation.
He acknowledged the challenges confronting the country but maintained that sustained public support and collective resolve would help Nigeria overcome its difficulties and achieve long-term growth.
Abiru further commended Nigerians for their resilience and patriotism, saying their perseverance remains vital to strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development.
Expressing optimism about the country’s future, he called for unity and renewed commitment to nation-building, stressing that cooperation among citizens is essential to consolidating democratic gains and fostering progress.
He also extended Democracy Day greetings to Nigerians and offered prayers for continued peace, development and prosperity across the country.
“Today, I join the good people of Lagos East Senatorial District and millions of Nigerians across our great nation in commemorating Democracy Day 2026, a significant occasion that affords us the opportunity to reflect on our democratic journey, celebrate our collective achievements, and renew our commitment to the ideals of democratic governance.
“On this auspicious occasion, I pay special tribute to the resilience and unwavering patriotism of all Nigerians. Let us remain united, hopeful, and committed to the collective task of nation-building. Together, we can consolidate the gains of democracy, strengthen our institutions, and build the Nigeria of our dreams,” he added.
