Federal Government has commenced production of 10,000 metric tons of wheat across nine states to reduce importation and bridge national deficit.

Federal Government has commenced production of 10,000 metric tons of wheat across nine states to reduce importation and bridge national deficit.

Executive Secretary of National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), Paul Ikonne, disclosed this at the weekend, during flag off of dry season farming in Jigawa State.

He said the agency has secured 2,500 hectares of farmland in nine states for commencement of the initiative. He said NALDA will also provide farmers with seeds, pumping machines, generators, fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides.

Jigawa State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, explained that the effort of the state in agriculture is being complemented by support from the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, through the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrowers Programme and NALDA’s intervention.

He promised that the state is ready to render all the assistance NALDA would need for the project.

“We are committed to this development. We committed to agriculture and we are committed to obeying President Muhammadu Buhari, who asked us to produce what we eat and eat what we produce,” he said.
