The Federal Government has said that the replacement of the damaged expansion joints on Kara–Berger Bridge section of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway will commence tomorrow, September 8, 2026.

It, however, said that the rehabilitation is expected to last two weeks.

The Acting Controller, Federal Ministry of Works, Ogun State, Richard Adeleye, disclosed this at the weekend during an inspection of the affected section of the expressway.

Adeleye said the repair had become necessary as the expansion joints had exceeded their service life and were posing risks to motorists.

He said that the work would be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to traffic, saying that one half of the affected section would initially be closed while motorists use the other half under controlled traffic conditions.

The Acting Controller said the repair was expected to be completed by September 22, 2026, subject to prevailing construction and operational conditions.

He, however, explained that expansion joints allow bridge structures to accommodate movement caused by temperature changes, saying that failure to replace damaged joints could result in structural problems, such as buckling and cracking.

Adeleye added that the affected construction area would cover about 100 metres and assured motorists that the rehabilitation would not exceed two weeks.

He, therefore, appealed to motorists to exercise patience during the work, noting that the damaged expansion joint had contributed to accidents along the section.

Besides, he advised motorists travelling towards Ibadan to consider alternative routes, including the Ikorodu–Ogijo Road, Shimawa Bridge and the old road to Abeokuta, where appropriate.
