The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 11 persons in a lone auto crash at Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway.

The accident, which occurred on Sunday, involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE 722 KJ.

The spokesperson for the command, Mr Afolabi Odunsi, said in a statement yesterday that all 11 occupants of the vehicle — 10 men and one woman — died in the crash.

According to him, preliminary investigations showed that driving under the influence and overloading caused the accident.

Odunsi said the vehicle somersaulted and plunged off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside after the doors locked on impact.

He added that local residents assisted rescue officials in dismantling the vehicle to recover the bodies.

The remains of the victims have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.

The Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists travelling along the Abeokuta-Lagos route to exercise caution, particularly at night.

He also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, three persons escaped unhurt in a separate road accident involving a Lexus RX 300 in the Iyana Itire area of Lagos State.

The accident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on Sunday after the SUV, with registration number APP 682 HE, collided with a bus before crashing into two parked vehicles along the roadside.

Eyewitnesses gave conflicting accounts of the incident.

One witness said the driver was speeding along the service lane and appeared to be attempting to avoid hitting a pedestrian before losing control of the vehicle.

The witness said the driver hit a curb and rammed into two parked buses, causing panic among residents and passersby.

Other witnesses described the incident as a close call that could have resulted in fatalities.

No death was recorded, while the two parked vehicles damaged in the crash were unoccupied.

Sources said there were three occupants inside the Lexus at the time of the accident, all of whom survived.

The driver reportedly told witnesses that he suddenly lost control of the vehicle and could not explain what caused the crash.
