Kano govt to prosecute suspected killers of housewife, six children

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf

Poised to restore public confidence, the Kano State Government, on Monday, took over the prosecution of suspects arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of a mother and six children in the state.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, SAN, announced the development at a press briefing on Monday.

Fatima Abubakar, a housewife, was slaughtered by assailants early Saturday, alongside her six children, including a minor thrown into a dry well in their Dorayi Chiranci Quarters, Kano.

The Kano Police Command, however, tracked down three suspects in connection with the dastardly act, one of them said to be a cousin of the deceased housewife.

The state Attorney General said the takeover of the matter by his office was on the directive of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. He said the government considered the gravity of the incident and the need for decisive legal action and a transparent judicial process to restore public confidence.

He described the tragic incident as a senseless act that has left the entire state in mourning, and added that Governor Yusuf-led administration will ensure justice is seen to be done in the matter.

According to the Attorney General, the murder of the woman and her children constitutes a heinous and inhuman crime that offends both humanity and the rule of law.

The Commissioner for Justice noted that the timely intervention of the police led to the arrest of suspects linked to the killings, describing their efforts as critical to the ongoing pursuit of justice.

He further assured residents of Kano State that no effort would be spared in ensuring accountability, transparency, and strict adherence to due process throughout the investigation and prosecution.

According to him, the government is committed to allowing the law to take its full course without interference, as he enjoined members of the public to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, despite the anger and grief generated by the incident.

Meanwhile, Governor Yusuf has commended the state police command for its swift and professional response that led to the arrest of suspects involved in the brutal killings.

Governor Yusuf described the police’s prompt action as a clear demonstration of commitment and courage in protecting the lives and property of the people of Kano State.

Yusuf, in a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, said the horrific incident deeply saddened the state and added that the speedy intervention that led to the arrest of the suspects has restored public confidence.

He therefore assured his administration’s readiness to support the police and other security agencies to ensure criminals have no hiding place in Kano.

Similarly, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, commended the timely arrest of the three suspects over the gruesome murder of the victims.

Senator Barau, in a statement by Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Malam Ismail Mudashir, described the arrest as soothing news and called for a speedy trial of the suspects.

“I commend the command for its swiftness. This is the first leg; the command should conduct a thorough investigation and ensure a speedy trial so that these ‘killers’ are prosecuted and brought to book.

“They must face the full wrath of the law. We will follow this to its logical conclusion. Over the past hours, I have been traumatised, devastated and overwhelmed by the gruesome murder of these innocent children and their mother. This is barbaric and beyond comprehension,” Barau said.
