A road accident along the Katsina-Kankia road has claimed the lives of nine persons, while 17 others sustained injuries.
The Federal Road Safety Corps, Katsina State Command, said the incident occurred on Saturday night at about 8:03p.m. at Kwanar Gidan Mutum Daya, involving a commercial bus and a trailer.
The statement was signed by Deputy Route Commander, Shamsudeen Babajo, of the FRSC RS1.3 Katsina Sector Command.
He explained that a Toyota Hummer commercial bus and a trailer collided, affecting 26 persons. According to him, rescue teams from the RS1.35 Kankia Unit Command responded swiftly to a distress call and arrived at the scene within 23 minutes to commence rescue operations alongside other emergency responders.
Babajo said 17 victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, including fractures, broken legs and severe cuts, while nine persons died in the crash.
Four of the deceased were reportedly burnt beyond recognition after the commercial vehicle caught fire moments after the collision.
All injured victims were evacuated to the General Hospital Kankia for urgent treatment, while the remains of the deceased were removed from the scene.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
The FRSC sympathised with the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the accident.
The corps also urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, avoid reckless driving and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, especially during the Eid al-Adha period.
