• Says NYSC uniform offers no immunity
• Assures NYSC of corps members’ safety
• Corps mandates NERD clearance for corps members’ mobilisation
Ogun State Commissioner of Police (CP), Bode Ojajuni, has cautioned National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the state that the NYSC uniform does not place them above the law or shield them from legal consequences.
Ojajuni gave the warning yesterday while receiving the Ogun State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Adewuyi Frances, and members of her management team, on a strategic courtesy visit to the Command’s Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
The aim of the visit, according to the CP, was to deepen collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the NYSC, adding that it also to strengthen measures aimed at ensuring the safety and welfare of corps members serving across the 20 local councils in the state.
The CP reaffirmed that safeguarding lives and property is a core responsibility of the Command and pledged that corps members would continue to enjoy robust security coverage and protection.
The Commissioner of Police, who reflected on his NYSC experience, encouraged the corps members to make the most of their service year by developing strong character, cultivating discipline, and honing their leadership abilities.
He, however, warned them to steer clear of criminal activities and negative influences, emphasising that the NYSC uniform does not shield anyone from prosecution if they are found to have committed an offence.
The police chief, therefore, urged them to uphold the scheme’s values by serving as worthy representatives of their families, home states, and the nation throughout their service year and beyond.
In her response, the NYSC State Coordinator praised the Command for the exceptional care, guidance, and mentorship it has consistently provided to corps members serving in police formations.
She also lauded the Command’s proactive approach to maintaining security across the state.
Meanwhile, the NYSC has said that clearance from the National Electronic Registration Database (NERD) is a compulsory requirement for the mobilisation of prospective corps members.
It made the declaration in an update shared on X yesterday.
The NYSC, while urging prospective corps members to complete the process early, warned that failure to obtain NERD clearance would delay mobilisation.
“This is to inform PCMs (prospective corps members) that without NERD clearance, no NYSC. Get your NERD clearance early. Avoid delays in your mobilisation. No NERD clearance, No NYSC!” the update stated.
