Kano state government has signed agreements with two French based agricultural input firms to enhance natural resources and boost food production in the state.
The agriculture intervention anchor on climate smart regeneration for high yield seed and farm mechanization to transform into modern farming model and gradually fade out traditional system.
Briefing on Friday, Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources in the state, Dr. Mahmoud Danjuma disclosed the renewed policy engagements were parts of the strategic import secured at the just concluded Paris International Agriculture Summit.
Dr. Danjuma explained the state government participation with high powered delegation led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf took the advantage of the largest global agricultural show in France to demonstrate policy frame work on agriculture and secured patternship to rejuvenate food production.
According to the Commissioner, Kano sealed partnership with a foreign firm on high-yield seeds and drought resistance crops such as Rice, Maize, Legume corps and Vegetables to boost food production.
“Kano had a robust team attended the event, and His Excellency the Governor was part of that event as well. There were over 2,000 different companies that participated in the show demonstration of crop production, mechanisation, animal husbandry, livestock, seeds, and modern techniques of agriculture.
” We had engagements with several international partners and focus was on high-yield seeds, whereby our productivity will grossly be enhanced. You know, the productivity of an average hectare of land in our own case, let’s say rice, are not more than 40 to 50 in some extreme cases you have up to 80 bags of rice per hectare.
” Now with the MoU with the partners to produce improved seeds in which a hectare can produce 140 bags. So the objective is to introduce climate-smart, climate-resistant seeds to our own region, in which while resisting the droughts, it’s all equally multiplying the produce.
“You know, even if the rain happens not to get to the point whereby produce will give the kind of yield that is required, drought-resistant and climate-smart seeds will give you more than triple of what you get in normal seeds, while withering away the effect of drought”. Dr. Danjuma explained.
The Commissioner asserted the state’s bilateral agreement with another agricultural input firm to strengthen machinery entities including farm and input machinery entities to scale up agricultural production.
With the actualization of the agreement, Dr. Danjuma revealed that Kano will parade high-quality farm implements, including tractors, and other mini-implements, and even solar-driven equipment.
The commissioner clarified that government interest held firmly for improved and hybrid seeds to boost high yield and not in agreement to import Genetically Modified Organisms GMOs. He said Governor Yusuf was mindful of adaptable seed to agriculture land and whether of Kano.
Dr. Danjuma emphasized the significant of the policy demonstration of Governor Yusuf ‘s administration on agriculture, assured that the Paris summit will not only boost food security but also improve farmers livelihood and income general.
