Police arrest trigger-happy officer in Rivers
The police in Rivers State have arrested an officer, name withheld, for gunning down a man identified as Olafuro Peterside in the state.The Guardian gathered that the incident occurred, last Thursday, at Elekehia Area in Port Harcourt.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the development, said the trigger-happy officer attached to the Police Mobile Force (PMF) 43 squadron Gombe State, has been arrested while investigation is ongoing.
It was gathered that the deceased was hit by a stray bullet from the police officer’s gun at a popular bar in Elekehia area of the state.
According to sources, the deceased was married and was with his family when the incident occurred.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said: “The man was with his wife and three children when the police officer was shooting in the air in response to an alarm raised by some persons that there were armed robbers around the area.
“The bullet from the officer’s gun hit the man, who was rushed to a hospital where he was confirmed dead.”
Meanwhile, groups across the state have called for justice for the deceased. They called on the state’s Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi, to ensure that the affected officer faces the law and not shielded.
