The Borno State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Damian Chukwu, has confirmed that security operatives deployed to the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) intercepted and killed two suspected suicide bombers on Thursday night, with no other casualties.

Chukwu disclosed this yesterday in a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Victor Isuku, to journalists in Maiduguri.

Isuku in the statement said: “On Thursday, July 6, 2017, at about
10pm, two male suicide bombers were sighted and intercepted along the parapet behind the University of Maiduguri by the joint security operatives deployed to the university.

“One of the bombers was shot dead, while the second one hurriedly detonated his strapped Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), killing himself alone to prevent being captured alive by the military and security operatives.

“The Police command recently deployed a full unit of Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel, as well as ‘guard and sniffer’ Police dogs to the university,” said Isuku.

He added that the deployment of Police was to complement the presence of other security personnel at the varsity, which has yielded
dividends in preventing attacks on UNIMAID and adjourning communities.

He said the Police Explosives Ordinance Department (EOD) team was drafted to sanitise the blast scenes and environs to restore normalcy.
