Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Council, Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, has been impeached. Oshionogue was impeached in a letter signed by seven councillors.
He was impeached a few hours after lawmakers in the Edo State House of Assembly failed to hold a peace meeting with him and seven aggrieved councillors.
It was gathered that the chairman was removed following attempts by three of the councillors, who did not attend the meeting with the lawmakers, to remove seven of the aggrieved councillors.
Sources said the seats of the seven councillors were declared vacant, prompting them to rush to Igarra, the headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Council, to issue the impeachment letter.
The letter of impeachment reads: “We, the undersigned members of Akoko Edo Local Council Area Legislative Arm, hereby impeach you as the acting Council Chairman with effect from today, January 28, 2026.
“This decision is a result of your abuse of office, high-handedness, embezzlement of council funds, anti-party activities, financial recklessness, forgery, and constant disobedience to constituted authorities.”
A viral video captured moments when the impeached chairman was booed out of office. Efforts to reach the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Paul Ohonbamu, were unsuccessful as he did not take his calls.
