A group in the South-South has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to consider contesting the 2027 presidential election, citing his experience and democratic credentials as assets Nigeria could draw upon at a critical time.
The call was made in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, by the spokesperson for the South-South Vanguard Renaissance Group, Mr Henry Tamuno, in a communiqué issued yesterday.
He said members of the group believe Jonathan remains well-placed to contribute to national leadership if he chooses to re-enter active politics.
According to Tamuno, the former president’s time in office and leadership style continue to resonate with many Nigerians who are concerned about the country’s current economic and governance challenges.
He described Jonathan as a seasoned democrat with a track record that, in the group’s view, deserves renewed consideration.
Tamuno said the appeal for Jonathan to contest was not rooted in regional sentiment, stressing that leadership should be assessed on competence, experience, and national outlook rather than sectional considerations.
He noted that Nigerians are going through pains under the current All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
“It is important to avoid framing the 2027 election along regional lines,” he said, adding that Jonathan previously enjoyed support across different parts of the country during his tenure as President.
The group maintained that the 2027 general election presents an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on leadership choices and demand policies that promote economic stability, national unity, and inclusive governance.
Tamuno urged citizens to remain engaged in the democratic process and to continue expressing their support for Jonathan for effective leadership as preparations for the next election gather momentum.
