The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Lagos Central Senatorial District, Bamofin Ladipo Johnson, has unveiled a five-point legislative agenda for the district.

Speaking to supporters in Lagos during the launch of his campaign policy document, Johnson canvassed support for the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said Obi possessed the capacity to address the country’s economic challenges, urging Nigerians to support the NDC presidential candidate .

He explained that his legislative agenda was designed to provide practical solutions to the challenges confronting residents of Lagos Central, with emphasis on social welfare, economic empowerment, youth development, infrastructure and good governance.

Johnson said the protection, livelihood and development of his constituents would remain at the centre of his legislative priorities if elected.

Under his social welfare and housing agenda, he pledged to pursue legislation to curb arbitrary displacement of residents, establish structured temporary shelters and integrate healthcare, psychiatric support and skills acquisition programmes into social intervention initiatives.

He also promised to advocate social protection programmes for vulnerable groups, legislative support for elderly and child welfare, and the upgrading of community centres to promote grassroots development.

On economic empowerment, Johnson proposed low-interest credit lines for small businesses, localised and stable power grids in commercial hubs and what he described as friendly, non-predatory tax policies to support entrepreneurs and small and medium-scale enterprises.

He said he would also seek to reduce regulatory bottlenecks affecting local businesses, attract corporate investment to Lagos Central and expand community-based cooperative funding models.

According to him, the objective is to create an enabling environment for businesses to grow and generate employment opportunities for residents.

Johnson also placed emphasis on the blue economy, saying Lagos Central’s coastal location presented opportunities that could be harnessed to boost economic activity.

He proposed investments in modern fishing, aquaculture and maritime logistics, as well as the development of sustainable port-adjacent commerce to expand economic opportunities and revenue generation.

On youth development, education and employment, the candidate proposed technology-driven and artisanal incubation hubs, partnerships with technology firms to organise coding and digital marketing boot camps, and the establishment of a senatorial seed fund for promising youth start-up ideas.

He also pledged to partner with local industries to facilitate employment placements for young people.

In the education sector, Johnson promised to pursue the rehabilitation of dilapidated primary and secondary schools, provision of modern science laboratories and information and communications technology centres, continuous professional development for teachers and yearly tertiary tuition grants for brilliant but indigent students.

On infrastructure and security, he pledged to pursue policies aimed at making Lagos Central a safer and better-connected district.

His proposals include the development of standardised drainage networks to address perennial flooding, rehabilitation of inner-community roads and expansion of safe water and land transport links.

Johnson also proposed collaboration with community stakeholders and security agencies, including the deployment of localised closed-circuit television cameras in high-risk areas, while insisting that security measures must respect residents’ civil liberties.

In the health sector, he promised to advocate the modernisation of primary healthcare centres, free prenatal and postnatal care for low-income mothers and the enrolment of vulnerable constituents in subsidised state health insurance schemes.

On governance, Johnson pledged to ensure equitable distribution of legislative benefits without nepotism.

He also promised to hold quarterly accountability meetings with constituents and establish dedicated feedback channels through which residents could communicate their immediate needs.

The campaign document said the overall objective was to build a stronger and more inclusive Lagos Central through practical legislative interventions, economic opportunities and improved social services.

The NDC had previously affirmed Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections at a special convention in Abuja, with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.

Johnson urged voters in Lagos Central to support the NDC ticket, saying the party offered what he described as practical leadership and policies capable of improving the welfare of Nigerians.
