To end quackery in the profession, the outgoing chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Edo State chapter, Sonnie Ohenhen has called on practitioners to desist from endorsing building plans for those not trained as architects.

He gave the charge at the annual dinner party/swearing-in of the new state executives of NIA in Benin City.

Ohenhen said the endorsement of building plans for those who are not core professionals was the sure way of promoting and encouraging quackery in the profession which must be discouraged by all standards.

“ Let me appeal to our members to desist from endorsing building plans for those who are not even trained architects.

“ This is aiding and making the quacks to flourish in the profession and thereby destroying the practice”, he said.

While regretted that the profession has almost been taken over by quacks, he stressed that efforts are being made to reduce their activities to the barest  minimum.

“When we came in, the practice of architecture in Edo State was almost taken over by quacks.

By the efforts of members and with the help of the commissioner of housing and urban development, Frank Evbuomwan, plan approval process was sanitized and the story changed.

“As I speak to you now, I am happy to inform you that plan approving process is no longer business as usual in the ministry of physical planning and urban development, Edo State.

“All the relevant professionals now vet any plan submitted to the ministry for approval”, he added.
