Adeoye harps on Constitutional amendment for women to play major role in governance

The Founder/Convener of Inspiring Change Initiative, Sunmbo Adeoye, has called for the amendment of the constitution in a way that will give more opportunities for women to major role in governance.

The Founder/Convener of Inspiring Change Initiative, Sunmbo Adeoye, has called for the amendment of the constitution in a way that will give more opportunities for women to major role in governance.

Adeoye said this at the ninth edition of Inspiring Change Conference with the theme ‘Run Forward’ held at Wisdom Arena, Agege, Lagos.

She said women constitute over 48 per cent of the population and yet they beg for seats.

“We are not just saying give us seats for the sake of having seats. We ask for seats that we qualify for and where we are competent. When this is done, then this country will be on its way out of the penury it has been plunged into,” she said.

She decried the conspicuous body language of men not ready to allow women to take the front seats in the running of the country, adding that if they are truly ready, they would see to it that the biased constitution is amended for women to occupy the front row and Nigeria would leave penury behind.

On the place of Nigerian woman in leadership whether elective or appointive, Adeoye maintained that the bone of contention is that men are not ready to give way to women, insisting that when they are actually prepared, where to really start is the amendment of the constitution.

She said the conference, rated high among the most inspiring conferences, seeks to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve the lives and situations of SMEs and celebrate the outstanding achievements of women trailblazers.

Adeoye added that the scope of the initiative’s empowerment and mentorship programmes covers even the unlearned grassroots women.
