Agege Stadium in Lagos will tomorrow be beehive, as some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars, especially those with street credibility and huge following amongst the youths, will converge on it for the Mega Youth Concert.

The music event is the wrap up of the week-long celebration of the Lagos Youth Week 2018, the first of its kind in the history of the state and indeed in any state in Nigeria. The music fiesta is put together by Rise Networks, Nigeria’s leading social enterprise in youth and educational development with the support of the Lagos State government in commemoration of the United Nations International Youth Day 2018.

Speaking at a media parley ahead of the event, founder, Rise Networks, organiser of the gig, Toyosi Akerele- Ogunsiji, stated that the Lagos Youth Week is being held under the United Nations International Youth Day 2018 with the theme, ‘Safe Spaces for Youth’.

According to her, the concert was created to leverage the power of entertainment in uniting and enlightening young people about their civic duties with the goal of driving voters registration, citizen participation in the governance process and ensuring that young people, who form the predominant demographic of Nigeria’s population vote and stand to be represented in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

Akerele-Ogunsiji also explained that while the concert is free, guests are expected to attend showing that they are active citizens by presenting their permanent voters’ card (PVC) or temporary voters card (TVC) at the point of entry. She added that no fewer than 10,000 youths would converge at the stadium for the concert as headliners for the gig include Reminisce, 9ice, Idowest, Slimcase, CDQ, Ms Kiss, Daddy Showkey, Small Doctor and DJ Jimmy Jatt lead disc jockey.

While commending the governor Akinwunmi Ambode, the state government, the corporate and media partners, who have thrown their weight behind the event, Akerele-Ogunsiji stated that Rise Networks plans to replicate this initiative nationwide.

Programme of activities for the event were tailored at creating safe spaces for the youth through education, economic empowerment and political inclusion especially young people at the grassroots, who rarely get the opportunity to express and showcase their talents, skills, entrepreneurship and leadership capabilities.

Speakers at the conference, which held yesterday at the Blue Roof, LTV Complex, Agidingbi, Ikeja include Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji; Ola Brown, founder Flying Doctors Nigeria, West Africa’s first air ambulance service; Akin Oyebode, Executive Secretary, Lagos State Employment Trust Fund; Rotimi Williams, Founder of Kereksuk Farms, the second largest rice farm in Nigeria.
