Born again – Part 19
We must cry out as the hymnist Edwin Hatch:
Breath on me, breath of God, until my heart is pure: until I will with The one will to do and to endure The words of the saintly A.J. Jordan seem to have special point and power, if you are willing to let the spirit have all of you.
Oh to be filled with Thee! I ask not aught beside, for all unholy guests must flee if Thou in me abide.
From the wounded side of the Saviour comes to every child of God a cleansing that purifies, a blessing that satisfies, a power that is irresistible, a love that is unquenchable, a life that is abundant, and a supply that is constant. Can we ask for more?
What are some of the benefits/rewards of Spiritual rebirth?
• God marks us as His own
• We have the privileges of God’s children
• Restoration of our relationship to God our Father
• Eternal life
• We receive covenant benefits
Regeneration comes to those who repent of sin, turn to God (Mat 3:2), and put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone for salvation.
God marks us as His own
“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” (Eph 1:13,14) NKJV
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” (Eph 1:13,14) KJV
Sealed … Holy Spirit (v13). As a seal, the Holy Spirit is given to believers as God’s mark of ownership. By bestowing the Spirit, God marks us as His own (see 2 Cor 1:22). Therefore, we have the evidence that we are God’s adopted children and that our redemption is real, when the Holy Spirit is present in our lives (v5). We can know that we really belong to God, when the Spirit regenerates and renews us (John 1:12-13; 3:3-6), delivers us from the power of sin (Rom 8:1-17; Gal 5:16-25), gives us a consciousness of God as our Father (v5; Rom 8:15; Gal 4:6) and fills us with power to witness for Him (Acts 1:8; 2:4).
Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit and His place in the believer’s redemption is a central emphasis in the book of Ephesians. The Holy Spirit (1) is the mark or seal of God’s ownership (v. 13); (2) is the first installment of the believer’s inheritance (v.14); (3) is the Spirit of wisdom and revelation (v. 17); (4) helps the believer when he or she draws near to God (2:18); (5) builds the body of believers into a holy temple (2:21-22); (6) reveals the mystery of Christ (3:4, 5); (7) strengthens the believer with power in the inner being (3:16); (8) motivates unity in the Christian faith in full Christlikeness (4:3, 13-14); (9) grieves when there is sin in the life of the believer (4:30); (10) desires to repeatedly fill and empower the believer (5:18), and (11) helps in prayer and spiritual warfare (6:18).
Holy Spirit … the earnest (v14). The Holy Spirit is an “earnest,” i.e., a first installment or down payment, guaranteeing our inheritance.
