Maximising God’s grace (12)

Abel Ukachi Amadi

By Abel Ukachi Amadi

Key Verse:2 Corinthians 6:1, “We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.” (KJV)

Grace is the ultimate hallmark of the Christian faith. It is the unmerited, undeserved favour of God towards broken humanity. Through the finished work of Jesus Christ, we are saved by grace through faith, not by our own works or merit. Yet, in 2 Corinthians 6:1, the Apostle Paul issues an urgent warning. He beseeches and implores us, not to receive this breathtaking gift in vain. The word, “vain” (kenos in Greek) means empty, fruitless, sterile, or coming to absolutely nothing.

It is a tragic reality that a person can hear the gospel, experience the external blessings of the church, and yet allow the grace of God to result in complete futility in their life. To receive grace in vain is to treat the sacrifice of Calvary as a cheap commodity rather than a life-altering reality. It happens when we lay hold of the promise of forgiveness but refuse the power of transformation, choosing to remain comfortable in the very brokenness Christ died to redeem. True grace is never passive; but active, dynamic force that demands a response.

The admonition of Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians Chapter 6to “seek God now,” “now is an acceptable time,” and “do not let it come to nothing,” all indicate a passing opportunity. The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins illustrates our need to make the most of this opportunity now (Matthew 25:6-13). This parable’s major lesson is that both life and time are moving.Recall that 2 Corinthians is written to Christians. Paul’s message is a call to strike while the iron is hot! The New Testament’s instruction to Christians is, “Now is the time!” Everything is in readiness for success.

It is as though the New Testament writers are saying, “Don’t be like the slave who refuses when presented with freedom, or the diseased person who rejects help when offered healing. God’s door is open to us! Charge through it by cooperating with Him!” We as co-workers with Christ should take advantage of this time, with all zeal and concentration, all the powers at our command fulfill the kingdom assignment.

We are not designed to be passive storage units of God’s mercy, but meant to be conduits. God grants you the grace for an effective, soul-winning, life-transforming existence. When you use your spiritual gifts, stand as a witness for Christ, and work diligently to advance His kingdom, you are ensuring that His grace was not wasted on you. We are called to be faithful stewards of an infinite deposit, distributing the riches of His love into the ordinary spaces of our daily lives.

When we grasp the staggering cost of the mercy we have been given, we cannot help but pour ourselves out as a living sacrifice.

We do not serve to earn a place in His heart; we serve because we have already been given a home there.

When you use your spiritual gifts, stand as a witness for Christ, and work diligently to advance His kingdom, you are ensuring that His grace was not wasted on you. You become a tangible expression of His love, transforming divine favour into practical action. True grace makes a believer the hardest worker in the room because they are fueled by gratitude, not obligation. They recognise that tireless service is not a heavy tax paid to earn God’s affection, but a joyful response to a debt that has already been fully paid.
