You can be another Andrew
Text: John 1:40-42 Key Verse: John 1:41-42 “The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus….” (NIV).
The Apostle Andrew, whose name means “manly or brave,” was the first apostle of Jesus Christ. Andrew was a fisherman but dropped his fishing net and answered the call of Jesus to make him, fisher of men (Mathew 4:18-19). Andrew is one of the least and most obscure disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. He evidently had few talents and was limited in his ability to do big things. He never wrote a book like John, Paul and Mathew. He never preached a great sermon like Peter but he knew how to introduce people to Jesus. He was a soul-winner and as such a wise man. The Bible says in Proverbs 11:30, “…he that winneth souls is wise,” (KJV).
Only three things are mentioned about Andrew. First, he brought his own brother (Peter) to Jesus (John 1:42); secondly, he brought the boy with five loaves of bread and two fishes to Jesus, who multiplied them to feed 5,000 people (John 6:8-9) and thirdly, he brought some Greeks to Jesus (John 12:22). That is all we know about Andrew in the Bible.
But amazingly, without Andrew there would not have been the great preacher of Pentecost, Peter. Without Andrew, the hungry multitude would not have been fed nor the Greeks brought to Christ. Tradition tells us that one of the Greeks that Andrew brought to Jesus was Luke, the physician who wrote the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts.
Eternity will shock you. Many Andrews shall outshine some who are celebrated today in our world. There is still an opportunity to be another Andrew. You don’t even need great trainings, certificates, credentials to become a soul-winner. All that is required is to answer the call of the Master, Jesus just like Andrew did when Jesus called on him. This is your season. The man or woman you will bring to Christ today can be a spiritual giant tomorrow. Jesus said in Luke 15:7, “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”
Andrew was never famous like his brother, Peter but he was good at one thing, bringing people to Jesus. Since you became born again, have you brought a soul into the kingdom of God? Have you introduced Jesus to your family members? Remember the first thing that Andrew did when he was converted was to introduce his brother, Peter to Jesus. Andrew enjoyed bringing people to Jesus. You do not need to be a popular evangelist to bring people to Christ. All that is required is for you to get converted and be saved.
Don’t be ashamed to preach the gospel to people who are still living in sin because it is possible they are waiting for you to preach to them before they get converted. Andrew was a bringer; he was always bringing people to Christ. Perhaps over shadowed by his outspoken brother Peter, Andrew was always there in the background looking for someone to bring to Jesus. The gospel is the greatest news ever, so, who are you going to tell it to today? Andrew noticed even the smallest person among the largest crowd. Look around at your circle of friends and acquaintances and find out who needs Jesus. In heaven, Andrew’s name will stand as high as the man who knew how to bring souls to Christ. You can be another Andrew today.
