5 Ways to Identify AI-Generated Content

The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) into writing is to make research easy, and also give guidelines on how to carry out tedious tasks. However many people copy and paste whatever AI generated for them without giving it the human touch it deserves.

Researchers from Germany’s University of Tubingen and Northwestern University have revealed key linguistic markers that can help distinguish human-authored texts from those created by generative AI tools like ChatGPT.

By examining millions of texts, they’ve identified specific words that appear more frequently in AI-generated content, here are five ways to identify AI-generated content.

Some words appear many times

There some certain words that appear many times during the generation of content. These words are easily identified because of the frequency of their appearance.

Going by the Tubingen study, some of these words include “delves,” “showcasing,” “In conclusion” “underscores” became markedly more common, with “delves” being used 25 times more often. This increase makes it easier to know a certain content is AI-generated.

Similar content pattern

Most content that is AI generated follows similar patterns, no difference except it is well edited to give it a good human touch.

Researchers also looked at the broader context in which these words appear. They found that when multiple “marker words” are used together in a single text, the likelihood of AI authorship increases significantly. For instance, a text containing both “comprehensive” and “crucial” might be more likely to have been generated by an AI.

Moreover, when AI is given a command and a similar command is given to it by another user, there is a huge possibility that the results will be similar.

Incorrect content

AI (ChatGPT) is an aggregate of what people have done over time, therefore it cannot create what has not been input into its system.

Many times generated content is not correct, especially when it deals with cultures and traditions of people. It can dominate what it perceives to be the truth, therefore a careful study will reveal that its output sometimes is incorrect.

By comparing texts from before and after the introduction of ChatGPT, the researchers were able to pinpoint words that surged in popularity independently of real-world events.

This temporal analysis helps isolate words that are more likely to be associated with AI writing rather than human trends or topics.

Language differences and misinformation

Yoruba and some Nigerian language differences can cause a barrier and misinformation for output methods. The research carried out by Tubingen University also revealed the geographical variations in AI usage.

Papers from non-native English-speaking countries, such as China and South Korea, were slightly more likely to use AI tools. This regional difference could reflect the challenges non-native speakers face in producing high-quality English texts, leading them to rely more on AI assistance.

References do not match most times

The references in a ChatGPT content most times do not match. The reason is simple: most research papers have indigenous names that do not have English interpretation most times.

What you should do to give it a human touch

One way to build your writing style and technique is to follow the following principles:

Evaluate Beyond Vocabulary: Rather than focusing solely on specific words, assess the overall quality of the writing. Is it accurate, engaging, and relevant to the target audience? Does it make a persuasive argument and advance the conversation?

Be Aware of AI’s Role: Understanding the potential for AI involvement can inform your approach to evaluating and using written content.

While AI can enhance productivity, it’s important to ensure the content remains authentic and high-quality.
